The bet name, number of selections required, the number of bets it contains, the minimum number of winners to have a return, the details have letters substituted for selections. The table is ordered by the number of selections in each bet

Single Stakes About 2 2 1 1 stake A anything to come (a-t-c-) 1 stake B, 1 stake B a-t-c 1 stake A. One winner gives the same return as a single except the stake unit is not returned. 2 winners gives the same return as 2 singles on each selection but only 2 of the 4 stake units are returned. Also called 'Vice Versa', 'Up and Down' or 'Cross Bet'.
Double Stakes About 2 2 1 1 stake A anything to come (a-t-c-) 2 stakes B, 1 stake B a-t-c 2 stakes A. One winner gives the same return as a single except 2 stakes are not returned. 2 winners gives the same return as 3 singles on each selection but with 4 stake units deducted from the returns.
Single Lap 2+ 2+ 1 A bet of any number of selections comprising a single on each any to come a single on the next selection then stop. The any to come is on the next selection only. On 3 selections it is 1 stake A a-t-c B a-t-c C, 1 stake B a-t-c C a-t-c A, and 1 stake C a-t-c A a-t-c B
Double 2 1 2 The stake is placed on A, if that wins everything is then placed on B. If A or B lose, the stake is lost.
Forecast 2 1 1 Nominate 2 selections in a race to finish first and second in the correct order.
Reversed Forecast 2 2 1 Nominate 2 selections in a race to finish first and second in either order.
Combination Forecast 3+ 6+ 1 Nominate 3 or more selections in a race in which two of them must finish first and second in any order. The number of bets is the number of doubles in the selections, multiplied by 2 (for any order within each double e.g. 1-2 or 2-1 ). Therefore 3 selections is 6 bets ( 3 Doubles x 2)
Treble 3 1 3 The stake is placed on A, if that wins everything is then placed on B, if that wins everything is then placed on C. If A, B or C lose, the stake is lost.
Tricast 3 1 1 Nominate 3 or more selections in a race and they must finish lst, 2nd and 3rd. In horse racing this must be an handicap race with 8 or more runners declared overnight. In greyhound racing there must be at least 6 runners.
Combination Tricast 3+ 6+ 1 Nominate 3 or more selections in a race and they must finish lst, 2nd and 3rd in any order. The number of bets is the number of trebles in the selections, multiplied by 6 (for any order within each treble e.g. 1-2-3, 1-3-2, 2-1-3, 2-3-1, 3-2-1 or 3-1-2 ). Therefore 4 selections is 24 bets ( 4 Trebles x 6 )

ABC Roll-Up 3 7 1 A Rounder and Trixie.
Accumulator 4+ 1 4+ One bet requiring any number of selections but all the selections must win to have a return. Also called a 'Roll-Up' or 'Acca'. A Treble is an accumulator of 3 selections, if there are 4 selections it could be called a 'Fourfold' with 5 selections a 'Fivefold', etc.
Yankee 4 11 2 6 Doubles AB, AC, AD, BC, BD & CD. 4 Trebles ABC, ABD, ACD & BCD. One Accumulator ABCD
Yankee Plus 4 11 2, 1 6 Doubles AB, AC, AD, BC, BD & CD. 4 Trebles ABC, ABD, ACD & BCD. One Accumulator ABCD. Just the same as a Yankee but on the slip one position is nominated for a consolation. If the selection in that position is the only winner in the bet, a free Single is placed on that selection.
Lucky 15 4 15 1 4 Singles A, B, C & D. 6 Doubles AB, AC, AD, BC, BD & CD. 4 Trebles ABC, ABD, ACD & BCD. One Accumulator ABCD. This bet offers both a consolation and a bonus. If only one winner is selected the SP of the winner is doubled, i.e. a 5/1 is settled as a 10/1. Some bookies treble or even quadruple the SP of the single winner. If an each way bet is placed the double SP consolation (e.g. 10/1) only applies to the win part of the bet, the place parts are settled at 5/1. There also a 10% bonus applied for all 4 winners, that usually only applies to the win part of the bet.

Alphabet 6 26 1 Made up of 4 separate bets. In the order written a Patent on ABC, a Yankee on BCDE, a second Patent on DEF and an accumulator on ABCDEF. There is usually a 10% bonus for 6 winners. Selections in positions BCDE carry more importance as these appear in both a Patent and a Yankee. Selections A and F only appear in a separate Patent.
Placepot 6+ 1+ 0 A Tote bet that doesn't even need 1 winner. The bet requires at least one placed selection from each of the first 6 races at a horse meeting. To calculate the number of bets multiply the number of selections in each race, 1 in each = 1 x 1 x 1 x 1 x 1 x 1 = 1 bet, 2 in each = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 64 bets. It is acceptable to put FAV to include the favourite in a race. Should there be 2 or more joint or co favourites returned, your selection is deemed to be the fav with the lowest racecard number i.e. nearest the top of the list of runners. The dividend declared is variable, depending on the size of the Tote pool and the number of winning tickets. Place Dividends shows the finishing positions that count as successful depending on the number of runners in each race. To calculate the winnings multiply: number of winning lines X unit stake X dividend. For example a 50p perm of selections 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 x 2 x 2 = 96 bets costing £48, with placed selections of 1 x 2 x 1 x 3 x 1 x 1 = 6 lines successful, with a dividend of £150, gives a return of £450 ( 6 x 0.50 x £150 )
Jackpot 6+ 1+ 6 Same principles as the Placepot but one big difference. The first 6 WINNERS not places must be selected! The bet is staked in the same way as a Placepot but calculating the winnings is easier as it is only possible to have one winning line, Multiply: unit stake X dividend. In the event of a dead heat two dividends would be declared so use the Placepot method, multiply: number of winning lines X unit stake X dividend, if both dead heaters are selected. Again the dividend declared is variable, depending on the size of the Tote pool and the number of winning tickets. If nobody wins the jackpot the cash rolls over to the following day and pools of £100,000's can be generated. Placepot pools can also rollover to the following day but this happens very rarely.

Union Jack 9 8 3+ The worst bet going, it's possible to have 5 winners from the 9 selections and yet still lose all your stake. The bet is made up of 8 trebles on nine selections in a 3 x 3 grid. Three trebles across the grid ABC, DEF & GHI. Three trebles down the grid ADG, BEH & CFI. Two diagonal trebles AEI & CEG. The selection in the centre of the grid ( E ) appears in 4 of the 8 trebles. There are various combinations of as many as 5 winners that render the bet a total loser, for example A, B, F, G & I.
